DBH 3, The Lost World

Elementary Level Worksheet
Macmillan Readers The Lost World 1

The Lost World
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
B While Reading
A Before Reading
1 Look at the front cover of the book. What is the picture of?

2 Read about the story on the back of the book. Professor Challenger talks about a drawing and a
photograph. What do you think the drawing and the photograph show? Write about them or make
drawings.

3 Read to the end of Chapter 3. Write a new piece of the story. Write a conversation between Malone and
McArdle. Malone must explain to McArdle what has happened since their first conversation. Here is a
section from the end of Chapter 3. The dotted line shows you where to put your new piece of story.

4 You are Edward Malone. Make notes while you read Chapters 4 and 5 because you are going to write a
report for the Daily Gazette about your journey. Stop writing your notes after you have read this
paragraph on page 31:
Now write your report.

5 You are going to help someone who is going to
read The Lost World. Make a dictionary of new
words that you have found. Your dictionary can
have meanings in pictures and in words. Use the
story to help you write or draw your meanings.
Later that evening I went to see Mr McArdle, my boss at the Daily Gazette. I told
him everything that had happened.
‘So you are going to look for Professor Challenger’s Lost World,’ said Mr McArdle.
‘Well, Malone, you are going to have an adventure. Good luck to you.’
Then I wrote a report for Mr McArdle. I threw it across to Sancho. ‘Tell the
Indian to take this with him. Tell him to send it to London,’ I said.
C After Reading

6 Malone writes: We needed guns, tents, food and blankets. Later, he writes: We walked for nine
days. We carried everything on our backs.
Imagine you are going on an adventure. What will you take with you? Make a list of TEN
things that you will take.

7 Here are two paragraphs from the book. Each one is a description.
(a) Underline the words that help you to ‘see’ or ‘hear’ the scene in the book.
(i) This stream was a wonderful place. The water was bright and clear and we could see
many beautiful fish. Near the stream there were brightly coloured animals and birds.

(ii) In the pit were hundreds of pterodactyls. The females were sitting on huge yellow eggs.
There were babies beside the pools of green water. They were flapping their wings and hissing.
Each male pterodactyl sat on a stone. Their long grey wings were folded and they did not move
at all. They waited and watched with their red eyes. It was a horrible sight. I felt sick because
of the smell.
b) Write two short descriptions of places. Write one description of a place you like and one
description of a place you don’t like. You can use words from paragraphs (i) and (ii).
‘We needed guns, tents, food and blankets. Later, he writes: We walked for nine
days. We carried everything on our backs.’
