DBH 2, Gold Uses

GOLD USES

Medals and Awards:

As a highly esteemed precious metal, gold makes a natural appearance in crowns, awards and religious statues. Because of its unparalleled beautiful qualities and rarity, gold is one of the highest status symbols. In everything from Academy Awards to Olympic medals, gold is recognized for its admirable qualities and it holds a permanent place of value in humanity's eyes.

Finances and Investing:

Because gold is so rare and highly valued, this precious metal makes a natural currency, and has for at least 6,000 years. The U.S. used to hold all its monetary currency to a gold standard, and since the turn of the millennium, gold value has been on the rise in the stock market. In an uncertain economy, gold has emerged as a possible financial staple.

Two ways of using gold are, in banking and for medals and awards.
The gold in banking is saved for reserves in a very large amount, specially in the U.S.A and in Turkey.
Gold is also used for medals and awards because of its unparalleled beautiful qualities and rarity and because it is one of the highest status symbols.

USES OF GOLD

Apart from the uses of gold that we have seen in the book, we use gold in another ways:

- Air bags
Air bags, which are installed in over 30 million cars worldwide, have gold plated electrical contacts to ensure that the                                        safety devices work when necessary.
- Telescopes
In telescopes -like the Hubble- it has been used as a coating for gold to increase its resistance to corrosion and electrical                                connections.

  Investment
Gold is a safe haven in a crisis scenario. While traditional assets such as stocks and bonds, often fail in times of tension and instability of markets, gold has proven to improve the performance of portfolios, both in times of stability and financial instability during the past 5,000 years.

In addition, gold will always maintain its value through a wide range of economic scenarios and that is one reason why it is so attractive during an economic downturn

Gold Gilding and Gold Leaf

Gold has the highest malleability of any metal. This enables gold to be beaten into sheets that are only a few millionths of an inch thick. These thin sheets, known as "gold leaf" can be applied over the irregular surfaces of picture frames, molding or furniture.

Gold leaf is also used on the external and internal surfaces of buildings. This provides a durable and corrosion-resistant covering.
