From The Legend of Hercules
Thousands of years ago in Greece, in the city of
Thebes, there lived a beautiful queen. She was so beautiful that the great god,
Zeus fell in love with her – a mortal – and they had a baby son and named him
Hercules. All the gods and goddesses came to see the baby and decided to grant
him strength and courage. One day, two serpents slipped into the cradle
where the baby slept. They wound themselves around his throat but the baby
awoke, seized a serpent in each hand and strangled them both.
Years later, after slaying a ferocious lion,
Hercules was faced with the task of killing the Lernean hydra! From the murky
waters of the swamps near a place called Lerna, the hydra would rise up and
terrorise the countryside. A monstrous serpent with nine heads, the hydra
attacked with poisonous venom. This ferocious beast was no easy prey,
for one of the nine heads was immortal and therefore indestructible.
Hercules set off to hunt the nine-headed menace with his trusty nephew Iolaus,
by his side. By the springs of Amymone, they discovered the lair of the loathsome
hydra.
How was Hercules to fight the cruel beast? First, he
lured the coily creature from the safety of its den by shooting flaming arrows
at it. Then, as the hydra emerged, Hercules seized it! In a flash, it wound one
of its coils around Hercules’ foot making it impossible for the hero to escape.
With his club, Hercules attacked the many heads of the hydra. As soon as he
smashed one head, two more would burst forth in its place! How was he to defeat
this creature? Hercules called Iolaus to help him.
