THE ECONOMY OF WESTERN SAHARA
The economic and political evolution of the Sahara is directly related to the development of different research expeditions. Depending on the object of study of them we can distinguish three stages:
1. - The initiated in 1941 by Manuel Alia, with the aim of studying the possible existence of iron ore, phosphates and other minerals. Result of these studies will be commissioned to the public company ADARO of field work necessary for the possible implementation of the deposits discovered. So, in 1955, that company stated in its annual report that "the low grade of these phosphates and its geographical location is not possible to achieve a rewarding operation at current prices, but at this point there is a problem of autarky perhaps advised losses even carry it. "
2. - The second stage will be marked by oil exploration. It began in 1959 and extends to 1964 correctly. The beginning of this phase is marked by the adoption in March 1959 of the Hydrocarbons Law. During the 1960 and 1961 oil companies invest in research nearly 3,000 million pesetas. This situation caused a major economic recovery and rapid growth of the Aaiun, so that in 1963, Jose Maria Rios, President of ENMINSA (National Mining Company of the Sahara), stated that
"One of the major difficulties encountered with was the rapid and excessive growth Aaiun, motivated by the importance of oil research carried out, making it almost impossible to find any type of accommodation for both staff technical, and the employees and workers. "
However, this recovery was transient, weak commercial interest of the research findings in relation to oil prices at the time.
